Offline RPGs That Respect Your Time

Mobile RPGs have a reputation problem. Too many of them are stamina meters wearing a fantasy costume, and half of them stop working the second you lose signal. But there's a real crop of offline RPGs that give you an actual adventure.

Emberfall Saga is our current favorite. It's turn-based, it has companions with personalities, and every bit of it lives on your device. The combat rewards planning instead of tapping, and the story genuinely made me want to see the next town.

What to look for in an offline RPG: a save system that checkpoints often, combat with some depth, and a story that doesn't assume you'll play in tiny slices. Bonus points if it lets you pause mid-battle, because you're going to get interrupted on a phone.

If you're new to the genre, start on the normal difficulty and don't skip the tutorials. These games front-load a lot of systems, but they usually settle into a comfortable rhythm after the first couple of hours.
